There are many state and federal laws that specify minimum age requirements across a variety of topics. For example in the United States individuals must be at least 18 years of age in order to vote. And in some states children must be a minimum of 14 years old in order to have a job.

These are typical age milestones that people might want to verify:

• 21 is the minimum age in many states to buy certain products that require checking a photo ID to verify age.
• 18 is the minimum age at which individuals in the US are recognized as adults and can sign contracts, apply for credit cards and vote in state and federal elections.
• 16 is the minimum age in some states to apply for a learner's permit to learn how to drive. 16 is also the minimum age to donate blood, and in many states apply for a job.
• 13 is the minimum age required for children to create their own social media accounts on most major platforms.

How to Verify Age

If you need to check whether someone is a certain age start with the current year. Next subtract the minimum age number from the current year to get the minimum birthdate year. If the person's birthday was on this date or before in the minimum birthdate year they are of valid age. If they have not yet had their birthday this year they are not of valid age.

Example: ID Check for Today's Date

Say you're checking IDs for people to attend a concert where the minimum age is 18. The date is July 4, 2024. Following these steps you can verify whether someone is a minimum of 18 years old.

1. The year is 2024
2. Subtract 2024 − 18 = 2006
3. If a person was born on or before July 4, 2006 they are 18. If they were born after July 4, 2006 they are not yet 18 and are not of minimum age.
