Convert Part-to-Part Ratio to Fractions

Say you have a bowl of fruit with 6 apples and 8 bananas. There are 14 total pieces of fruit and the ratio of apples to bananas is 6 : 8.

To convert part-to-part ratios to fractions:

1. Use the total number as the denominator: 6 + 8 = 14
2. Use each of the ratio terms as the numerator in a fraction:
   6 becomes 6/14
   8 becomes 8/14
3. Reduce each fraction to lowest terms:
   6/14 simplifies to 3/7
   8/14 simplifies to 4/7
4. The part-to-part ratio 6 : 8 converts into the fractions:
   6/14 = 3/7
   8/14 = 4/7
5. You can conclude that of the 14 pieces of fruit with an apple-to-banana ratio of 6 : 8, 3/7 are apples and 4/7 are bananas.

Convert Part-to-Whole Ratio to Fractions

Take that same bowl of fruit with 6 apples and 8 bananas, 14 total pieces of fruit. The apple to total fruit ratio is 6 : 14, and the banana to total fruit ratio is 8 : 14. Unlike part-to-part ratios, part-to-whole ratios can be converted directly into fractions given the stated ratios.

To convert part-to-whole ratios into fractions:

1. Convert the part-to-whole ratios directly into fractions:
   6 : 14 becomes 6/14
   8 : 14 becomes 8/14
2. Reduce each fraction to lowest terms:
   6/14 simplifies to 3/7
   8/14 simplifies to 4/7
3. The part-to-whole ratios convert into the fractions:
   Apples to total fruit = 6 : 14 = 6/14 = 3/7
   Bananas to total fruit = 8 : 14 = 8/14 = 4/7
